Alabaster Jar

By Joshua Migadde

We have all wanted to have the best, the best outfit at a ceremony, the best grades in school, best phone, the best car that is available at that moment. It’s really cool and funny how we want the best for ourselves even though we aren’t perfect people.
But how often do we give the best to other people and if we do, do we do it with gladness, or in hopes that they may do the same for us.

This brings is to a young lady in Bethany named Mary. If you are familiar with the story of Mary and Martha, then you know who Mary is. She spent a lot of time listening to Jesus, we see this when Luke writes in Luke chapter 10. Luke 10:38-40
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

And in Luke 7, we see Mary anointing Jesus.
Luke 7:37-38 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.
38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Mary took the Alabaster Jar of expensive perfume and poured it at the feet of Jesus. It was Mary’s best and most expensive item and she brought it to Jesus. She believed Jesus, she anointed Him even before His death and burial. You may be wondering, couldn’t she put the perfume back into the jar. Alabaster jars were used as containers for ointment, perfume, and other cosmetic products and were made out of stone called Alabaster. If it was broken you can’t put it back together. But the content in the jar is what was the real thing.

Mary teaches us to give the Lord our whole hearts and our whole lives. Matthew 16:24 says “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mary denied herself an expensive perfume and gave everything to Jesus. All that this world has to offer us is nothing compared to Christ.

So what point do we take home, let’s give everything to Jesus, give your very Best to Jesus. As you Pioneer Again, give everything to Jesus.
